A new production of Robert Ashley’s 1993 opera Foreign Experiences for seven voices and pre-recorded electronic orchestra. Foreign Experiences follows Don, Jr., who leaves the Midwest to take a position at a small college in California. But everything goes wrong. Vocalist Gelsey Bell and saxophonist Erin Rogers come together to celebrate the release of their new album, Skylighght, which features tracks recorded in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. Using the historic structure as a third collaborator, their performance will feature a site-specific sonic interaction, artfully integrating the unique architectural shape and resonant acoustics of the space. Together, Bell and Rogers explore an intimate and vulnerable practice that brings together the voice and the saxophone, ultimately leading to a harmonic blend of multiphonics. The show will take place in the Green-Wood catacombs as part of the Phantom Waves concert series, curated by Gelsey Bell.

Samesoul Maker by composer Darius Jones is a work for four singers, bells, and vibraphone. As the companion piece to his 2014 composition The Oversoul Manual, which took us into the alien birthing ritual of the mothers of a planet called Or’gen, Samesoul Maker shows us the daily meditation that is performed by the fathers and community while the mothers are away from home. The work crafts a world of sound, syntax, and speech patterns that are different from ours, expressing the hope and truth that real communication lies beyond the realm of words and the familiar. Performers will include Gelsey Bell, Sunder Ganglani, Aviva Jaye, Levy Lorenzo, and Paul Pinto. The performance will take place in Green-Wood's Historic Chapel, on the Phantom Waves concert series, curated by Gelsey Bell.

thingNY performs Joseph White's You Against Nature and Mouthful, a new collaboratively written piece by thingNY. Based on Joris-Karl Huysmans‘ remarkable 19th-century novel Against Nature, You Against Nature offers a maximalist sound world exploring timely themes of isolation, decadence, hedonism, and the limits of self-sufficiency. Mouthful is thingNY's latest stab at collective creation exploring themes of ancestory, digestion, family meals, and the art of naming.

Performed by alejandro t. acierto, Gelsey Bell, Isabel Castellvi, Andrew Livingston, Paul Pinto, Erin Rogers, and Dave Ruder

mɔɹnɪŋ [morning//mourning] (Shortened Catacombs version)

mɔɹnɪŋ (the phonetic spelling for the word "morning" as well as the word "mourning") is an operatic masterpiece by singer and composer Gelsey Bell that begins just after humanity has disappeared from the Earth, and traces the weeks, months, years, and millennia that follow. What emerges is a journey through time that is simultaneously whimsical, fantastical, playful and profound, offering a poignant reminder of what it means to be human – despite taking place entirely after our species has vanished from the planet. This specially adapted, abridged hour-long telling of this critically acclaimed opera was created just for the Catacombs.
